Through the making of this piece, I was asking myself, what does it look and feel like to lose one's identity? How might it feel if my own personality and identity was replaced by messages that society dictates?
Pieces of Identity
Exploring the change in identity as a woman becomes a mother and takes on new traits and societal expectations.
Being a new mom means facing a whole new world of media and messaging that tells her who she is or should be. One consistent experience across new mothers is the realization that her identity is no longer hers alone, but is now shared with her own child and what the world says about mothers. This project visualizes the experience of many, if not most, new moms’ losing sight of one's “old self” and realizing the new societal messages and images that she is expected to suddenly take on.
